Wherever I go, my studio emerges. In foreign countries I discover new materials, glues, papers, brushes and fish! Here, in Kanonji, Kagawa, I enjoyed a few days of creation while contemplating the magical unfolding of this journey and all the relatives and friends I have been gifted to meet.

To celebrate World Ocean Day, I’ll be at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery to host Canada’s largest Gyotaku event!
This traditional Japanese art form dates back to the 1800’s when Samurai first started making prints from the fish they caught. And what better location than Steveston where the Japanese fishermen and their families immigrated to in the late 1800’s, early 1900’s and where the Steveston docks and fish boats supply us with fresh fish, prawns, urchins and much more!!
Come join us in this fun and educational event, dive into history and be connected to our oceans and its life!!

😉 We @gogcannery are ready to host all the Gyotaku enthusiasts waiting to try this fun and unique Japanese art form of making a print from painting on a real fish then transferring the image to paper!
I was so fortunate to have seen the oldest known Gyotaku while in Japan in April!
My great uncle who was a professor at the Hokkaido University in Marine biology was also practising Gyotaku. I am following the family tradition in keeping a traditional Japanese art form alive in the world.
It was a surreal experience to be sharing the art form on my recent trip to Japan!

From Atami to Hakodate - my first Shinkansen. Gradually getting colder as we traveled north until there was snow along the route. Hakodate - where I explored the wild coast, local shrines, public footpaths, and onsen, history of one of the first sea ports, farming, eating wild vegetable tempura, enjoying Hokkaido ice cream, seeing monkeys in Onsen and a fox by the lake.
The most amazing time in Hokkaido was finding and meeting a cousin!!!! She remembered me from a letter sent 38 years ago! If not for that letter there would have been no connection.

In Yamagata , we crossed through the mountain passes to get to Sagae, (home of my maternal ancestors), Tsuruoka, mountain Onsen, flooding lakes.
We saw the oldest known Gyotaku, family gravestones, shrines, shared stories with English,Japanese and translation apps. My family in Japan was surprised that I would be looking for them and they embraced it and created many great new memories!
