From the exhibition “If I Lived in the Ocean” that just finished after a summer of attention at the Foss Waterway Seaport in Washington. I agree - There was much to see. Everywhere you looked was a fish, plastic, kelp, printed cloth, a painting, a print, up high and down low, in behind and overhead.

I liked the idea of recreating a kind of Torii gat

I liked the idea of recreating a kind of Torii gate at the entrance of this exhibition. Using the plastic strips so they suspend overhead as you enter became symbolic of a traditional Torii gate. The fish and organic elements in the show feel like Kami to me; powerfully of the natural world.
The plastic film used here has come from the coffee roasting industry where they are used to transport coffee beans all over the world via marine cargo ships.

A “torii” is a traditional Japanese gate most commonly found at the entrance of or within a Shinto shrine, where it symbolically marks the transition from the mundane to the sacred, and a spot where kami are welcomed and thought to travel through.

Kami are the deities, divinities, spirits, mythological, spiritual, or natural phenomena that are venerated in the Shinto religion.

Much appreciation to the Foss Waterway Seaport organization to take on this challenging exhibition. @fosswaterwayseaport

The exhibition, “If I Lived in the Ocean” first seen at the Vancouver Maritime Museum in 2021, has now expanded to live in the 20+ foot high beamed roofline and larger space of the Foss Waterway Seaport. The expansive height and space giving me the feeling of being deep in the ocean. There is as much to see at ground level as there is at 20 feet up.
