The beach was covered in soft sand, where tiny crabs would run in and out with the waves. It was a place for us to go to splash in the warm water, refresh, bask in the sun and healing power of the ocean.
Lagos, Nigeria is a city of approximately 20 Million and estimates place 7 out of every 10 people having no access to a toilet. Since the government is facing massive infrastructure issues it becomes incumbent upon individuals, NGO's and community groups to do their best for improvements.
The ocean seemed able to absorb the number of people that were defecating on the beach until the area became popular for the hundreds of people arriving over the next 1-2 years. There is no more sandy beach.
The beachside was severely impacted by rising waters from global warming, the affects of sand excavation and dredging for development further to our west.
The beach that was absorbing some open defecation disappeared and the number of people needing toilets increased enormously! The beach is now a sharp cliff where the waves crash into the wall of sand eroding it daily. The beach-front is not a place accessible to us anymore because of the amount of defecation covering the area.
Waterless, composting toilets will bring decency, sanitation and dignity to the community.
The beach side will again be a place for enjoyment, recreation, healing, gathering and wellness.
